Chapter seventeen

Ace

It feels odd planning a war and a shotgun wedding. Four weeks have flown by, and I sent people to raid Mother’s supporters. Next, I performed background checks on different photographers. I needed to get ahead of my mother. I was tired of playing defense, but I knew it was a smart move.

Letha beefed up our security systems and placed alerts on specific searched keywords. We are setting traps, and now we hope a rat sneaks into one set for them. I hope it’s that easy. However, the evil cunt that brought us into the world is probably more intelligent than that.

According to King and Jack, Letha is the perfect addition to the team, and I can’t help but be pleased. I like Rainbow Brite. She seems like someone you want on your side.

Jack installed the nanny camera for Tess and got roped into playing with Winnie. She is obsessed with him and has him watching a unicorn series with her and making him give her horsey rides. I have Tess send me recordings discreetly, of course. Winnie wears a princess dress with tons of sparkling pink tulle, complete with a tiara and a scepter wand.

Jack is on his hands and knees, scanning an email on his phone while the show distracts her. Then, when she notices he isn’t paying attention, she takes her scepter and whacks him across his head. “Countess Buttercup of Peanut Butter, you must be on alert! The Court of Shadows has been lurking about. We must counterattack!” Winnie thrusts her scepter forward and yells, “Charge!”

Tess is giggling, but then tries to sound stern. “Winnie, Countess Buttercup of Peanut Butter may stop playing with you if you keep whacking him on the head.”

Winnie narrows her eyes at her mom and the camera. “Mom! I told you! I am Princess Gumdrop of Cotton Candy!”

“I apologize, my lady princess. But you should still be nicer to your pony, or he may join the Court of Shadows,” Tess explains to Winnie, trying her best not to laugh before cutting off the video. King and Queenie stand over my shoulder as I watch.

“I am not sure if I should feel sorry for Jack. I mean Countess Buttercup,” Queenie laughs, signaling me to replay the video.

King scoffs at her. “It’s Countess Buttercup of Peanut Butter. Get it right, Queenie!” he says in mock outrage like Winnie would be if she were here.

Joker looked through files across the table, not watching, but I could tell he was enjoying listening. His eyes never left the paperwork, but his smirk told me everything I needed to know. “Damn. Jack couldn’t even score being a duchess. He isn’t pretty enough to score that high.” We all knew that was a complete lie. Jack was a little vain. This is good for him, and I am glad my siblings are embracing their roles with my daughter.

“I know he is my twin, but I am pretty sure I would have gotten to at least Duchess level,” Queenie jokes, smiling back at the phone.
